A quarter in basketball refers to the period of time in one section of a basketball game. A NBA game is split into four, 12 minute periods that are referred to as quarters. The game clock reads how much time is left in every given quarter, starting at 12 and running all the way to zero.
The NBA has four 12 minute quarters (48 minutes in total) and the NCAA goes with two 20-minute halves (40 minutes in total). FIBA also uses four 10 minutes quarters to perfectly match the NCAA’s total time.
High School - High school basketball games are made up of four 8-minute quarters or two 16-minute halves. College - NCAA college basketball games consists of two 20 minute halves. This is the same for the WNBA and international games. NBA - NBA games are made up of four 12-minute quarters.
12 minutes being the standard NBA quarter length. We know that a quarter is 1/4 of a whole. So a whole game is 12 minutes * 4 = 48 minutes in a single game. If the game ends after 48 minutes and the recorded score is tied, an additional 5 minutes is given which is called OT (overtime), not 12 minutes.

The basketball game consists of four quarters of 10 minutes each. Teams play one-way for two quarters, the other way for the next two. There is a two-minute interval between the first and second period, and also between the third and fourth period, with 15 minutes for halftime. Coaches can call two one-minute timeouts at anytime during the first half and three timeouts in the second half.
